This is the most common question on my discovery calls, usually phrased as "we know we need video, we just don't know what kind." The answer decides your budget, your shoot, and where the finished piece will live, so it's worth getting right before anyone picks up a camera.
What a brand film is
A brand film is a two to four minute story about who you are: why the company exists, the people behind it, what it feels like to work with you. It lives on your website, your About page, sales meetings, and investor decks. Its job is trust. When a family watches the MESA school film, nobody is being sold a tuition plan. They're being shown what the school feels like inside, and that feeling does the selling.
What a commercial is
A commercial is 15 to 60 seconds built around one message and one action: book, buy, call. It's designed for paid placement, Instagram and YouTube ads, streaming TV, where you have about two seconds to earn attention. Everything is engineered for the hook and the call to action.
Side by side
| Brand film | Commercial | |
|---|---|---|
| Goal | Trust and connection | Immediate action |
| Length | 2 to 4 minutes | 15 to 60 seconds |
| Lives on | Website, sales, socials | Paid ad placements |
| Lifespan | 2 to 3 years | One campaign cycle |
| Typical NYC cost | $5k to $25k | $15k to $75k+ |
How to decide
- People visit your site but don't convert? Brand film. Something is missing in the trust department, not the traffic department.
- Nobody knows you exist yet? Commercial, backed by ad spend to put it in front of people.
- Long sales cycle with meetings and proposals? Brand film. It keeps selling between conversations.
- Launching a product with a deadline? Commercial, built around the launch offer.
The move most businesses miss: you rarely have to choose. A well planned shoot day captures the brand film and the raw material for cutdown ads at the same time. One production, both weapons. This is how I plan most projects.
Common questions
How long does a brand film stay useful?
Two to three years is normal if you avoid dating it with prices, headcounts, or a soon-to-change office. The MESA film will work as long as the school's story holds true.
Can a brand film be used as an ad?
Not as-is. Ads need a faster open. But 15 and 30 second cutdowns from brand film footage make excellent ads, which is exactly why shooting both together works.
Which should a small budget go to first?
Usually the brand film, because it works everywhere for years without ad spend. Then add commercials when you have money to put behind distribution. For numbers, see what video production costs in NYC.
